Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 60.0/100, a mean average of 59.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 59.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 18.8.

Weezer's Black Album continues the new, slick pop-rock sound established in Pacific Daydreams, but takes it up a notch. The drum machine beat, guitar-less melodies and simple choruses are in abundance, while Cuomo's lyrics are as bad as ever. The album is once again held together by its singles, while most of the surrounding stuff is pretty forgettable.
Weezer has fully embraced this new sound, which results in a slightly more varied and fleshed-out sound. Most songs are very far from classic Weezer however, sounding more like modern pop music. That's not necessarily a bad thing, it's just disappointingly bland. It's like the band didn't even bother to try to stick out.
Overall a good album, but no track really special.
After a couple of weeks:
The first three songs are fantastic, but it goes downhill from there
A month after the "Teal Album", Weezer returns with the "Black Album" in the tradition of his predecessors: some good moments in a disappointing set. Rivers Cuomo has always been very productive. May be too much. Since the "Blue Album" and "Pinkerton", the band alternates between excellent and big shit. This Black Album does not sink in total darkness. But he should not dazzle fans either. The album is struggling to take off, with a succession of songs that lack life. "Can not Knock The Hustle" and "Zombie Bastard" give from the start to vomit so these songs are null and stop reading the disc ... Which would be a shame because the next track, "High As A Kite", save the album alone. The title is undeniably one of the most beautiful in Weezer's repertoire. We find the harmonic spontaneity of the beginnings, on a melancholic power pop with 90's sauce.
4/10
The reviews for this album have been mixed to say the least , ranging from proclaiming 'Weezer are back' to 'When will Weezer stop being disappointing?'. I'm some where in the middle with The Black Album but leaning more towards the negative
Let's start with the positive: closer "California Snow" is the clear stand out track and correctly released as the first single. Excellent way to close things out
From here things get murky
The funky "Can't Knock The Hustle" , the slow rocker "High As a Kite" and the disco beats of "Living In L.A" are all okay but no better good
Then we have the truly awful and I mean REALLY diabolical tracks: "Piece Of Cake" , "The Prince Who ..." could well be Weezers worst song which has the truly awful "Do Do Do" refrain and "Byzantine" sounds like it was recorded using a $20 Casio Keyboard"
The remaining tracks are average at best
Leaving 1 excellent track , 3 good tracks , 3 average tracks and 3 terrible tracks that stink
Weezer are far from back
I'm Just Being Honest
This comment is beneath your viewing threshold.
High as a Kite is definitely one of the best songs they've put out in a while. That being said, Zombie Bastards and a couple of the other filler tracks are ridiculously cringy.
Either the best of "bad Weezer" or the worst of "good Weezer." Can't Knock the Hustle and High as a Kite are some of their best songs of this century, but some of the fillers tracks are just too cringey for me to really love this.
I love the whole theme of this album. Most of the songs start off like"We're freaking bad ass," but by the end of the song their nerdy demeanor shines through with insecurities and such, I just find that super charming. Also the production here is fantastic; the thick bass especially shines through on most songs. As of now I love all the songs (especially Can't Knock the Hustle!) but I'm Just Being Honest does sort of leave a bad taste in my mouth, luckily that's the only one.
I like the unique edge they have on their sound. It is individual and catchy. Not bad.
