A great piece of melancholia, impressionism, melody and sound collage. Like a lot of Robert Pollard's albums, the album is an impressionistic sketchbook. I think the quick pace of Pollard's page-turning is one reason why his work is usually more successful than the prog-rock albums he salutes. He also hates sentimentality in production (and so do I). The lyrics are his usual odd, funny poetry. Not In My Airforce dwindles to a set of acoustic doodles, which makes the whole thing feel like an ongoing personal work caught in progress. What makes this such a great album is each of the individual songs has a lot of emotional pull, just great melodies, haunting vocals, inventive sounds, it's all there.
