Giant is Michael John LaChiusa's masterpiece, adapting Edna Ferber's Giant into a 4 1/2 hour epic of a musical, mixing the traditions of Rodgers & Hammerstein's traditional structures with his own experimental forms of storytelling. The music is pastiching appropriately to the music of the era, mixing sounds of country, Mexican folk, and early jazz, and the orchestrations are as lush as a film score.
