Other than J.D. Crowe and the New South's self titled (colloquially known as "double "O" forty-four, for its Rounder Records call number), there is not a more essential bluegrass record. Featuring Crowe himself, Doyle Lawson, Bobby Hicks, Todd Phillips, and the G.O.A.T., Tony Rice, this band blew minds in '81 and continues to do so today. Precision is key with the Album Band, certainly, but precision doesn't take away from this crew's ability to /emote/- there is true feeling here. This is where you start if you want to discover bluegrass.
