Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 3% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 77.1/100, a mean average of 76.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 77.4/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.7.

You could decry it as bloated and self-indulgent, lacking in the obvious keeper tracks of his more popular albums, but this drug-fueled personal odyssey is raw and groovy as hell.

A very underrated concept album that shows Gaye struggling through heartbreak and divorce.

One of the most underrated albums of all time, this is Marvin's artistic and emotional masterpiece. If you've never been too into "What's Going On" but can't get enough of "Heard It Through the Grapevine", you're gonna love this one. The music fluctuates from the most tender and sweet doo-wop to deep and delivious funk grooves to melancholy and wistful jazz. For all the strains of divorce and bitter accusations, at the end of the day this is one of the best albums about love ever made, one where it's perhaps even more of a curse than a joy, one where you can hear it's every moment nagging on his soul. Brilliant in every way.

Lacking pretty significantly in songwriting and perspective, this is still a moving, grooving, well-produced set of songs. A little too long, but gorgeous sounding.

I forgot how good this thing was. So much is going right here, bass lines, guitars, funk, vocals, lyrics, melodies, organs, beats, pure soul! Marvin is one of the greats! Some filler towards the end could have been cut. I never knew a bitter divorce album could be so blissful to listen to.

Love this album - even given the circumstances surrounding the making of the album, I find this album perhaps Marvin's most accessible and peaceful album. I don't find it depressing at all / it grabs your soul. Have been listening to this album a lot of late at the same time as Frank Ocean's Channel Orange / deliberately.

If you've never heard this album before, please have a listen in its entirety a number of times.

Can't formally vote yet unfortunately - warning, this album talks directly to the soul - 90/100.

A kind of soul, blood on the tracks. Here, my dear, is a stunningly ambitious album dealing with Marvin Gaye's relationship, break up and divorce to his wife Anna Gordy. Apparently, Gaye even used the advance payment for the record to pay for the divorce. The music is equally incredible. Shifting from one mood to another, both musically and lyrically, it is impossible not to get drawn into the emotion, it is simply heartbreaking. It is an incredible song cycle, each track playing it's part, and it is every bit as beautiful and brilliant as his classic album, what's going on. Simply jaw dropping.
