Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some artists can have several thousand ratings)
This artist is rated in the top 2% of all artists on BestEverAlbums.com. This artist has a Bayesian average rating of 81.8/100, a mean average of 81.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 82.2/100. The standard deviation for this artist is 13.8.

I could listen to Distant Lover on repeat all night...and have done!
One of the great interpreters of song. His "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" may be my favorite rendition of any piece of popular music.

A wonderful soulful guy who's life was too short. The albums he made for Motown in the 70's are almost equal to those of Stevie Wonder. If you don't know his back catalogue listen to What's Going On, Let's Get it On, Here My Dear and I Want You. He also made some great solo singles in the 60's and with Tammi Terrell made some brilliant duets.

Marvin Gaye evolved like nobody else. From Motown popstar, to socially aware, to sexy r&b star, to coke-addled mess, to tragically short comeback. He redefined black music and showed that an artist could control his career. Greatest black artist ever.
