Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 73.5/100, a mean average of 73.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 73.5/100. The standard deviation for this album is 11.2.

It's like hearing the young Juliana Hatfield. But that's okay, because she deserves to be great!

Much prefer the songs and sound of the previous record which sounded like a personal collection of someone stepping out of the bedroom with a guitar and asking a group of friends to back her. Though this isn't polished it's a more studio produced feel and sound which for me takes away some intimacy. Tracks aren't as immediate but I've only heard it once.

There's some good storytelling and production, but is so musically underdeveloped and unadventurous.

Fantastic. Some of the cleanest sounding but wildly impassioned music that you can find. Not a low point on the whole record. I’m really surprised that the opinions here are so divided. Sure it’s super personal but what art isn’t? The music sounds great and the lyrics aren't a negative for me.

An undeniably personal record, but unfortunately it ends up being that case where it doesn't offer much for the outside listener in the process. Too much borrowed, shapeless, light-riff swirl that rarely engages on the musical front, though the lyrics can be quite vivid and heartbreaking at times. A record perhaps she needed to make, but one I have no real interest in returning to.

Sophie Allison’s proper album number 4 explores the emotional narrative cast over her following the cancer diagnosis of her mother via ‘color theory’ a concept peice in 3 parts

Act I: “blue” represents ‘sadness’ with the opening 4 tracks “bloodstream”,“circle the drain”, “royal screw up” and “night swimming” ( no it’s not a cover of the classic R.E.M track from 1992 )

Act II: “yellow” represents ‘sickness’ with tracks 5, 6, 7 “crawling in my skin”, “yellow is the color of her eyes” (clearly about her sick mum) and “up the walls”

Act III: “grey’ represents ‘darkness’ with the closing 8, 9, 10 tracks

I really dig the 3 act concept part as well as the heartfelt lyics around some genuine pain however its let down by tracks that simply fall flat (“night swimming” , “lucy”, “gray light”) and spoil the broth

Its no ‘Clean’ but remains better than ok

Color Theory shows its strength in its lyricism. "Bloodstream" wonderfully calls upon childhood imagery to create a feeling of emotional loss. "Yellow Is The Color Of Her Eyes" is also effective in making me feel the tragedy of a terminal illness. The albums quietness does work against it quite a bit for me. The acoustic guitar feels bare bones and a lot of the melodies feel taken from contemporaries. As the album went on I felt my investment lessening unfortunately.

Uninspired youtube-esque guitar music. Same old chord patterns, Shoegazey vocals. Not for me
