Honestly? It's good. Musically one might call it a fantastic pop record, and they would not be wrong. The politics of the lyrics are of course hard to swallow at times. It's one of those albums that I can't quite tell whether it is brashly feminist and sex-positive, or just shallow, consumerist, and hyper-sexualized. A little bit of both, of course. But goddamn her voice is good, and she knows how to write a melody like not many others.

And hey, if you don't enjoy pop music, why are you over here bagging on it anyway? When people talk about your favorite hard rock album as "just a bunch of screaming," or some analogous criticism, you naturally think to yourself "well they just don't understand this type of music." Its the same thing here, and I can tell you because I woulda rated this a 20/100 probably just one year ago. Now Lorde is in my top 20. It's just an exposure thing. Not an attack, but food for thought.

The blockbuster pop album of the 2010s? Um... okay. Now Teenage Dream isn't bad, which perhaps may be it's problem. One of the Boys was BADDDDDDDDDDDDDD, but it was an interesting terrible- mainly in just how low it would soil itself to get attention. Teenage Dream on the other hand is mostly a controversy-free unleashing of pop songs that are exactly the sum of their parts are nothing more. Katy Perry has proved she has unsatiable, chameleon-like showmanship and can surely sell a 60-inch 3D Magnavox TV to Mr. Magoo, but she's a rather uninspired songwriter who plays by the rules even during her pretend bits of naughtiness that always clearly magnify her reasonably comptetant but always try-hard nature. Mostly just barely-below-average dance tracks with a few bland attempts at heartfelt ballads and "inspirational" tracks here, all of which rarely sink into extreme cringeworthiness ("LET ME SEE YOUR PEACOCK! COCK! COCK! COCK!"). The one geniunely ambitious track ("E.T") bellyflops on it's own tasteless, flat-footed presentation, but surprisingly it's the more serene, misty Laurel-Canyon vibe of "Teenage Dream" that really hits home and the only track on here that truly soars (though "Hummingbird Heartbeat" isn't half-bad either). All in all a flashy, forceful but mostly lifeless album that still became a massive hit anyways despite deserving the moniker of Nobody's Favorite Anything.

Most people don't realize shes actually quite a good musician with just a guitar and her voice. Unfortunately the pop world has ruined that.

Teenage pop pap, bad material and awful production. I will give this to her, she sure can sell it.
