This compilation from Chess Records' mainstays, The Dells, touches on most of the soul/r&b/funk group's classics that saw the quintet of vocalists stay relevant and contemporary for at least 3 decades of the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Still recording in the 90s, this disc covers their biggest and most chart-topping successes. What distinguishes The Dells is the interplay of their two lead singers - raspy voiced baritone Marvin Junior and falsetto tenor Johnny Carter in hybrid co-lead vocals trading off mid-phrase. It's a winning combination deftly and astutely arranged and managed by the group. Their harmonies were honed on street corners and perfected in studios and performance halls throughout the Chicago area. A finer slice of r&b you will not find.
