Grouplove continue to sound more like The New Pornographers with each release and that’s of course a compliment. Almost 10 years into their career (dear god where did the time go ) ‘Healer’ is their most accomplished and mature album to date
Grouplove return with an album continuing the slick and polished indie rock sound from earlier albums. With electronic influences and a knack of writing epic song finales, Healer brings wider experimentation and variation to the band's sound. The less likable songs are EDM-induced electropop tracks recorded to keep the modern kids happy. It is a pity that those very songs sound so little like Grouplove did on their debut.
That being said, there are still plenty of great indie rockers on the LP; songs that fit the modern soundscape perfectly while staying true to the band's roots. A good example of this is the lead single, Deleter, that could have been part of an earlier album. The overall tempo of the album is fast, with an atmosphere of happiness. The odd ballad fails to stand out properly and unfortunately doesn't do anything to enhance the listening experience.
