Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 5% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 76.4/100, a mean average of 78.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 78.3/100. The standard deviation for this album is 9.7.

Plenty of highly rated albums receive the critical acclaim they deserve such as Strokes, Fiona Apple and HAIM but what is 2020’s most underrated album? That diamond in the rough that blows those in the know away but virtually invisible to the wider audience? I would argue that gem is this one - ‘Moral Panic’ by Nothing But Thieves

Back in 2015 I was a huge fan of their self titled debut which easily landed high up on my year end best of list. However the sophomore follow up 2017’s ‘Broken Machine’ was a bit of an over produced ambling mess and personally a massive disappointment so coming into ‘ Moral Panic’ I really didn’t know what to expect

But I need not have worried because Nothing But Thieves are back in a big way with an exception album for our times. Whilst the previous album was all over the shop ‘ Moral Panic ‘ is laser focused addressing the internet, politics, self worth among other important issues, backed by NBTs trade mark rockers , power ballads and everything in between. The singles are great , hell every song could be a single

The Muse comparisons are undeniable ( the ending of “Phobia “ may as well be “Knights of Cydonia”) but as they say imitation is the greatest form of flattery

Simply outstanding and completely under appreciated
