For such an iconic artist who has been around for the past 58 years Joni Mitchell really hasn’t released too much material relative to such a long career. Remove the various Best Of’s and Bootlegs and its even less material so when new material appears in 2020 it really is a treasure to behold
‘Archives Vol 1: The Early Years 1963-1967’ is quite the behemoth at 91 tracks and a tick under 6 hours which includes 28 “Song Introductions” by Joni herself which for me was where the real joy was found. These spoken word sections captures Joni in her timid young voice generally giving some background to the forthcoming track but also has her diverging into general stream of consciousness territory as well for example Canada’s World Trade Fair from the 60’s
To fully absorb this massive release takes something of a lifestyle choice but I did it over the course of a weekend with headphones doing jobs around the house and I can’t recommend more highly you do the same
