Like many Americana artists before Americana was a thing, record labels just did not know how to market artists like Katy Moffatt, who transcends many American genres.
Moffatt's self-titled debut was marketed towards Nashville country, and when that record went nowhere, Columbia decided to reframe Moffatt as a California Joni Mitchell or James Taylor type singer-songwriter with smooth LA production. Fortunately for Columbia, Moffatt could write as well as sing.
The result is nothing extraordinary. It's more of a time piece of the late 70s than an artistic project. Moffatt would not record again until she released the fantastic "Walkin' on the Moon," which was stripped down to just her acoustic guitar, years ahead of the stripped-down approach that was popular in the mid 90s.
Moffatt has five originals here. She covers "Walkin' After Midnight" and reworks it in a bluesy bar band style that works really well.
