It'd be a lot higher if it weren't competing so directly with Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall, it deserves to be higher. Like steppenwolf666 down there, I also think it belongs ahead of The Wall in 3rd place as far as PF is concerned. Dogs, Pigs, and Sheep are some of the greatest, most epic songs and the other 2 are just bookends, a minute long or so. All of the notes are so beautiful and perfect throughout. It's all tied together so well, the theme, tone, structure, it's like a symphony. It works perfectly as a whole and is best by far listened to in its entirety with the lyrics out if you don't already know them. A lot of ppl actually think this is even better than DSOTM."  [+]  Reply

The stranger, sees Joel at the peak of his songwriting powers, in a record that contains all that's great about an incredibly underrated songwriter. Movin'out, kicks the album off in superb style. The title track, another Joel classic, precedes one of his most celebrated pieces. Just the way you are, wasn't originally intended to be on the LP, but fortunately for Joel, was persuaded otherwise. It's slick, extremely sentimental, but it is lovely. The original first side ends with the centrepiece of the album. Scenes from an Italian restaurant, is one of, if not the greatest of all Billy Joel compositions. Epic in scale, it was inspired by the medley on the second side of the Beatles masterpiece, Abbey road, this is his Italian/American version. Vienna opens the second side, another excellent cut. It's followed by two more Joel stunners. She's always a woman, is a beautiful folk ballad, another of his best, and that's followed by the catchy, only the good die young, wonderful. If there is a weak moment, it's probably the penultimate track, get it right the first time. It's still a good song, but it's not in the same class as the rest. The intro also sounds like the theme tune to the old children's t.v. show, rainbow. The album ends on a spectacular note. Everybody has a dream, is a moving ballad about someone living in their imagination, but hoping his dreams come true, it's fantastic. And that's it. If you haven't heard this album before, give it a go. If you appreciate great songwriting, you will love it. Excellent. "  [+]  Reply

While I love Bob Marley and all he's contributed to the world of reggae music, it's his love songs, rather than his political ditties, that feel most memorable to me. "Waiting in Vain" is the highlight here, with its heartbreaking repetition at one point: "I don't wannna / I don't wanna / I don't wanna / I don't wanna / I don't wanna wait in vain." Well not so much as lie but more beat up the populace in the streets as much as the people they are supposed to arrest. Yes, I'm homing in up on 'Police & Thieves'. Some of the guys in The Clash has just promoted themselves from playing the pubs. On this album, their very first I may add, they not only cover a new song for the time but also one which is a totally different genre! Such a step into alien territory should be a beacon to all that this band would go onto much more ambitious projects. I don't mean to like... spoil the ending but yes... they record some great stuff on their run. Meanwhile, this laid back 6 minutes of social observation perfectly encapsulates what this album is about. The working class, trouble, the police, the rich and poor and "The Clash" between which they are named after. Funny that though, this is the most laid back song here. Elsewhere we have the riot immanent 'White Riot' with its brick in the window guitars. There's a claustrophobic yell along named 'What's My Name' which harkens back to The Who's singles heyday if they were having a rather bad nightmare... The Who not The Clash. Plenty more to keep you occupied. And you know what these songs say? They say these are your working class guys. They want a pint and no hassle. Short songs like 'Hate & War' and 'Career Opportunities' you are getting. No beating around the custard bowl, they say what they want and they are done. A loud guitar driven album of protest songs and spit that you won't want to miss."  [+]  Reply
