Gallon Drunk incorporate Duane Eddie-esque rockabilly twang with a kind of a voodoobilly tribalism that invokes the music of Bo Diddley, Cramps, Gun Club and the Birthday Party but subverts them into a totally new territory. A swinging rhythm consisting of prominent drums, organ, and maracas lend a demonically sinister and dramatic element to the music as if its protaganists are conducting the equivalent of a musical exorcism. At other times, calmer instrumental passages evoke the atmosphere of 'cocktail lounge' and postmodern Western movie soundtracks. Meanwhile, James Johnstone's vocals emerge from a seemingly disparate parallel universe. The only criticism I have of this album, is that at just 32 minutes and 10 seconds, you don't want this masterpiece to end.
