Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 71.3/100, a mean average of 70.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 70.6/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.4.

The Horses and the Hounds was my most anticipated album of 2021, and I daresay it remains my top favorite. James McMurtry has been kicking around since his 1989 debut on Columbia, and has consistently put out good, albiet overlooked, material since that time. The Complicated Game LP in 2015 really raised the bar and hit you in the gut like none of his other albums had done before. That record featured beautiful portraits of common people with their emotions, sorrows, and gripes about our ever changing world.
The follow-up, The Horses and The Hounds, is probably McMurtry's most assesible albums. McMurtry arranges his masterful story-songs with lovely melodies, gorgeous hooks, fine production that compliment the songs really nicely. The title track is one of the most catchy songs we have ever heard from McMurtry.
This obscure artist is criminally overlooked, and he has certainly earned a seat at the head of the table of Texas folk singer-songwriters, many of the legends came and left this world long ago. McMurtry carries that legacy with a keen eye on love, loss and the wonders of life.
Highly Recommended.
