Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 60.3/100, a mean average of 60.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 60.1/100. The standard deviation for this album is 20.2.

It is quite apparent that when it comes to Coldplay, there are a group of people who hold the first four albums in such high regard that everything that followed is second rate. I am not in that camp, in fact I started with Music of the Spheres which I thought was excellent. A word which really irritates me when it comes to albums is 'filler'. As a musician myself, there is no such word in the musical world, filler is something I use before I decorate a room. No musician sets out to write a piece of music just to fill time on an album. With all that off my chest, I think this is a very good, vey musical album with a great use of atmosphere, something Coldplay excel at.

It has some highlights - Every Teardrop, Charlie Brown (which is great) and Major Minus (a pleasant surprise). But there is a lot of filler here, especially Princess of China which is very disappointing and somehow was released as a single and charted well.

Better than advertised. Certainly not on the same level as Coldplay's previous four masterpieces, but it's solid all the way through. Probably gets too much hate because it's "pop," but it's fun, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Bland, uninspired and commercially orientated. Could have been the b-side cd of Viva La Vida for hardcore fans. #notmycoldplay

Not bad, but not great. Honestly, most of the album went right over my head. The songs weren't memorable for me. Ill say this though, UFO is an excellent track. It really spoke to me and is the most like the songs from Coldplay early years. Worth a listen and the rest of the album is too, but it just wasn't my thing.

It's very pretty. But it's such a fall from Viva La Vida.
