Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 70.0/100, a mean average of 68.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 69.8/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.0.

Unfortunately this pales in comparison to his previous albums. Of course Desert Rose towers over the rest, but apart from Big Lie Small World, Fill Her Up and maybe the title track, it just doesn't go anywhere and feels uninspired.

Sting takes some big chances on Brand New Day. Older acts that attempt to fit into popular music rarely succeed but Sting's fame rose from the singles here for a couple years.

It's a very uneven album in quality and sound. Sting tackles Bossa Nova, Eastern Influence, and country to varying degrees of success. Brand New Day is the only song that sounds like the usual Sting

1000 Years, Desert Rose, Fill Her Up, Brand New Day are highlights. Ghost Stories is pretty good.

Middle of the album is middling. The last strong record Sting made of original songs toward the end of his storied career

A decent effort from Sting the first half(1-4) is better than the middle then it picks up again at the end (tracks 8-10).

Sting had the makings of a very good album here, with great tracks like "Desert Rose" "After the Rain has Fallen," the title track, and JT's guest vocals on "Fill 'er Up." Unfortunately the three years break after the excellent Mercury Falling was apparently not enough, as the filler on this release is subpar for a Sting album. Or maybe Sting had already reached his peak, he certainly hasn't done anything special in the 10 years since this on either.
