Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 68.8/100, a mean average of 66.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 66.8/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.2.

I kind of agree with the other comments on this album that it feels like a step backwards. The previous albums always went big and over the top, both on the pop and metal aspects, and the grungy guitars and sometimes understated vocals on this do feel like a step away from that. It wasn't really what I was expecting after listening to the previous albums, and I was a bit underwhelmed after first listening to this one.
I think this album does benefit from repeated listens though. It suffers from the expectations set by Poppy's previous albums, and it's easier to appreciate when you go in knowing what kind of sound to expect. A lot of the songs do have nice hooks to them, and it's an album that grows on you if you give it a few listens.
Overall, it probably is weaker than her previous albums, but it's worth giving a second chance to if it doesn't make a good first impression.
Poppy’s career has been marked by stylistic change. First she was pop, then she was metal. Unfortunately, this is the first change that feels like a step backwards. “Flux” is a subpar collection of tracks that feel like mid 90’s alt rock. In particular, the sound is indebted to Garbage but without the tenacity that Manson brought to the music. The choruses are underwritten statements of general feeling. “So mean” is the best and worst example of this with the juvenile repetition of the title over and over. Poppy’s vocals are mixed extremely quietly and is drowned out by the music. When they can be heard, they are okay if not a bit too saccharine. A disappointing album.
Among her tongue-n-cheek mix of bubblegum pop and heavy/thrash metal and futile noise experiments, she now comes with basic pop punk. Some tracks go a bit further back in time to '90s alt rock/shoegazing ("On the Level", "As Strange as it Seems"), and '80s new wave ("Hysteria"). Old head rock purists will probably find it "surprisingly good even though they don't usually listen to this type of music". What a compliment, from the only people who have authority to claim something is good music on the internet, and are not at all blinded by anglo-american-centrism.
