Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 6% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 75.8/100, a mean average of 76.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 76.9/100. The standard deviation for this album is 11.9.

I was a big Dream Theater fan up to Octavarium, but started losing interest when Systematic Chaos was released, and although I've listened to most of the albums released since a few times, I've never gone back to them the same way as their earlier stuff.

So from someone who is a bit of a lapsed fan, this is probably the album of theirs I've most enjoyed since Octavarium.

For me, it does a good job of combining being melodic and catchy with the virtuoso musicianship and solos, which is what I always thought was Dream Theater's biggest strength. It also sounds really nice, the production on this album is really good.

Highlights for me are "Transcending Time", which I think is a great example of the combining catchy, melodic songwriting with incredible musicianship, along with "Answering the Call" and "The Alien".

It is an album which sounds very much like they're staying in their comfort zone, which might not be a compliment for a prog band, but I think it's how reminiscent of the old stuff it is which makes me enjoy it so much. Overall, I think this is a really good album, and I think anyone who liked their classic albums would enjoy this.
