probably the closest metal has gotten to being decent in and of itself but I'm not really a fan. I respect images and words though....
more metal cliches but with better musicians. i like them when they stick to more classic prog I guess

I have tons of respect because they are extremely talented players, but they can't write a half-decent song to save their lives.

Not every band has a 10 HANDED DEMIGOD on every instrument
Amazing musicians with some underrated somgwriting talent, but they should've hung it up after Octavarium.

Musically they’re currently the best band out there. It’s not all in technical stuff, but it tends to be forgotten among non-musicians how hard it is to perfect playing instrument(s).

Don't know if I call myself a fan, but lots respect for these guys, they are great musicians with fantastic variety. Most importantly, they make very engaging music.
It sounds like there is tons of inspiration that they put into their music, which is something honorable.

Dream Theater has been a favorite of mine since I first seriously started listening to music.
We always mention their musicianship, and of course it's on a level that only few other bands have reached, but sometimes that's all people focus on and there is so much more to the band than that. Dream Theater can write truly amazing songs, not just long epic songs. They have an amazing sense of melody and they are one of the best live bands on Earth.
I don't think anything has topped, or ever will top Scenes From A Memory in their catalog, but Six Degrees and Octavarium came close. This band helped revolutionize and widen the audience of progressive music and for that they should be applauded.
