Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 68.3/100, a mean average of 67.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 67.8/100. The standard deviation for this album is 17.9.

I agree, veeeery underrated. New millennium is a masterpiece that might not belong to DT

I think this album is underrated. Sherinian brings an interesting dynamic to the band's sound, and Petrucci belts out some of his most tasteful solos ever. There are a few duds on this album, for sure - it tends to be a bit too "alternative" in spots, and gets a little -too- dynamic at times. Still, songs like New Millennium, Hell's Kitchen, Lines in the Sand, and Trial of Tears are Dream Theater at its best. Even the piano-driven song Anna Lee gets high marks in my book.

Some other minor issues that keep this album from DT's top tier:
(1) Some of the songs are a bit -too- derivative of other bands, even for DT.
(2) The album is far more succinct than some of the others in DT's catalog, but they still managed to leave the best work from the recording sessions off the album. Then again, the 20-minute epic Metropolis Part 2 was developed into a (generally) excellent full album two years later, so I can't complain too much.
(3) Desmond Child's influence on You Not Me makes that song sooo un-DT. The original chorus was just as bad though. The song probably should've been canned completely in favor of Raise the Knife.

I guess my 90/100 is factoring in all the deleted material - otherwise, we'd be looking at a low-end 85.
