"Everyone's right and no one is sorry / That's the start and the end of this story" sings Matthew Caws of Nada Surf to open "Lucky", their follow-up to "The Weight Is A Gift", and it still feels as though the weight truly is a blessed gift. They sing some more upbeat alt-pop that sounds nothing like their beginning hit "popular", but more like the fountain of wayne's last hit "stacy's mom". Such hits can define and bury artists, as they attest to on that same opening track, "See These Bones": "Look alive, see these bones, / What you are now, we were once -- and just like we are, you'll be dust.". It's this type of depth in their music that reminds me of death cab for cutie, and it's no coincidence that Chris Walla of DCFC produced their last album and that Ben Gibbard cameos on "Lucky".
