A very solid debut. You can see the ingredients of what they were to become here. A little too sparce in places and the songs aren't up to later releases but worth owning for anyone who is into americana / Nu / alti-country.

This is a solid debut. Like its follow-up, it does suffer from the fact that they weren't taking themselves all that seriously yet. But while it has some throw-away tracks, it also has a few truly amazing ones.

I was a bit surprised when I listened to this for the first time, as the debut album for Drive-By Truckers already has their signature sound and smart lyrics. One thing they didn't have yet is their signature cover art...
They sang "18 Wheels of Love" off this one at ACL in '08 - a song about Patterson Hood's mom and her late-life romance with a trucker. It was much better live with the whole story (and the updated ending), but it's great on record too.
"Steve McQueen" is my favorite track on here, about how his hero growing up was Steve McQueen, and he lost his license by age 17 as a result.
"Sandwiches for the Road" and "The Tough Sell" are the other great tracks on this, the debut album for one of the best bands in the world.
