Still super safe pop-rock, but this surpasses what Phil Collins was doing at this point.

Mike Rutherford, long-time guitar player for Genesis, started his own band to reasonable pop success. Recruiting fine vocalists Paul Young and Paul Carrack, the Mike+ debut storms out with two pop gems and as a whole is a fine pop album for the guitarist/bassist, even culling an unused Genesis song ("a call to arms") and making it his own.
