2007 was a big year for Finland's synthpop scene, which had lagged behind the UK and US synthpop scenes by a few years - okay, it was 20 years - but when this album by Processory (a duo consisting of synth-whiz Jori Hulkkonen and singer Jerry Valturi) was released on Valentine's Day to take advantage of the big holiday "retail bump," it was... actually, a bit of a miscalculation since they don't celebrate Valentine's Day in Finland, they celebrate "Friend's Day," which is totally different and doesn't involve the purchase of synthpop CDs, unless it happens purely by accident. Nevertheless, Processory kept at it until two months later when Jenni Vartiainen released her smash-hit debut synthpop-adjacent album, "Ihmisten edessä," which went on to sell over 65,000 copies (this is actually big number in Finland, particularly for anything that doesn't involve Black Metal). Personally I prefer the Processory album (this one), probably because Valturi sings in English (my native language) with lots of reverb and Vartiainen doesn't, but either way, this album has some interesting stuff on it. It's not bubbly or syrupy, though it's not electrogoth either. Somewhere in between, I'd say. So while it won't make anyone forget Depeche Mode, or even the Pet Shop Boys, it might make you forget Falco or even Peter Hamill, assuming you haven't forgotten those guys already. (Edited)
