The Leslie West Band is the third solo album by the legendary guitarist Leslie West, recorded at the iconic Electric Lady Studios (New York) and released by Phantom Records. This is a work at the intersection of hard rock and blues rock, where West's signature guitar sound is combined with a dense rhythm section and brass instruments.
Leslie West's guitar remains the central element, delivering a powerful, overdriven sound with a distinctive vibrato and blues-influenced phrasing.
The rhythm section (bass and drums) creates a resilient groove, particularly in tracks like "Get It Up (No Bass - Whatsoever)".
The use of brass and keyboards adds depth and variety to the arrangements without overpowering them.
West's vocals are delicate yet expressive, with hints of blues and soul.
"Money (Whatcha Gonna Do)" is an opening number with an aggressive guitar riff and assertive vocals.
"Dear Prudence" (a cover by The Beatles) is an unexpected, dark, and melancholic interpretation. Ken Asher demonstrates his keyboard prowess, reminiscent of his work on John Lennon's "Mind Games."
"Singapore Sling" (written by Mick Jones) showcases West and Jones's subtle guitar collaboration.
"Sea of Heartache" is a three-minute ode to Black Sabbath, with heavy riffs and a dark atmosphere.
"We Gotta Get Out of This Place" (cover by Mann/Weil) is a Led Zeppelin-lite version, with a focus on guitar parts.
"By the River" is a gentle ballad that unfortunately ends too abruptly.
Rating: 7/10 — an album for fans of hard blues and Leslie West's legacy. (Edited)
