Shona Laing is a New Zealand singer. By 1985, she had already worked with Manfred Mann's Earth Band (participated in the recording of the album Somewhere in Afrika) and even starred as a singer in the movie Shaker Run. In 1985, she returned to New Zealand and released Genre. The album was released on the label Pagan Records (catalog number PAL 1004). By genre, it is described as pop-rock with a strong influence of synthpop and new wave. The key feature is the active use of synthesizers, which was typical for the new wave of the mid-80s. At the same time, Shona wrote all the songs for the album herself.
The track "(Glad I'm) Not a Kennedy" deserves special attention. Although the Genre album itself did not chart, the song became a notable hit: it reached number two on the New Zealand charts, entered the Billboard Alternative Songs chart, and was nominated for a New Zealand Music Award as Single of the Year. Later, Shona included it in her next album, South (1987). (Edited)
