Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 70.5/100, a mean average of 69.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 69.4/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.9.

Storms is Nanci Griffith's seventh studio album and her third for the MCA label. Following the commercial failure of Little Love Affairs, Griffith moved to the pop section of MCA and tried her darndest to make a pop album with a strong folk core.
The material is nice but does not really live up to the content she had produced earlier in the decade. Still, it's a lovely album and a welcome contribution to her catalogue.
Particularly excellent is the title track, written by Griffith's ex-husband Eric Taylor. Taylor was not commercial in any sense of the word, so it's lovely to hear his song performed in such a catchy way.
Three albums into her MCA contract, it must have been frustrating for Griffith to get some traction. "Is anybody out there??" she sings on the final track, and one can only wonder if this is how she felt being tossed around as the record executives tried to figure out how to market such an unorthodox singer and performer.
Also, she sings "Loretta Lynn," not "ritalin" on the track "Listen to the Radio." Misheard lyrics be damned!
Track Pick: Listen to the Radio
