Poet In My Window is Nanci Griffith's second album. Four years is a long time for an emerging artist, so it is surprising that little has changed in that time. Poet sounds like Nanci aspiring to be Joni Mitchell. Fortunately the first album made her a name in the folk scene across the country, but with no major label interested, Griffith again released the record independently on Featherbed Records, the same label that released Eric Taylor's "Shameless Love." Taylor and Griffith were married at the time and Griffith contributed vocals to Taylor's magnificent debut. Griffith would divorce Taylor, but she would continue to record Taylor's songs throughout her career. Thankfully, Poet in My Window earned a record deal from Philo, a small label for folk songwriters, but a good offer nonetheless, and concurrently her career started to really take off.
