Lots of people in these comments are saying this album is a disappointment. Completely untrue. Lyrics, musicality and production all much improved from the first album. Sure, it's not as angry or "punk," but at the end of the day, that doesn't matter as much as how enjoyable it is to listen to. And this is definitely enjoyable start to finish. Stay Free, especially, is one of the Clash's very best songs. (Edited)

Perhaps it's a bit easy to be disappointed by The Clash's second outing, but I get the impression that a lot of people are missing the point. It's less of a studio album and more of an in-between EP between their synoptic, succinct debut and their groundbreaking follow up.
Although inconsistent, it does very well when it hits high, and accomplishes the key achievement of not just being a "Debut 2.0" record; sure, the attitude hasn't changed, but the production is more expansive and we see the band starting to go beyond just conventional punk rock structures here.
This is the album to visit when you've listened to their debut and London Calling and are ready to delve deeper. It's the Clash in transition, but is far from just a muse for new ideas for their next album. Because the fact of the matter is this: the riff on Safe European Home is insane; Julie's Been Working For The Drug Squad is a poppy, almost doo-wop, satirical masterpiece; Stay Free is perhaps the softest and most tender song the whole of the punk genre produced; All The Young Punks kicks ass for how hopeful it is about the future of the genre.
A transition point in The Clash's development that has plenty to offer in its own right.
An under-rated Clash album. This is a really good and energetic album with each song a cracker.

Solid. Not their best, but better than 90% of punk music. These guys really were leaders of the genre.

The lower ratings must be from people who didnt give this album time. I didnt like it as much when I heard it the first couple of times. As I grew up and widened my music taste I came back to it... this record is actually much better than people here give it credit. Clash's 3rd best in my opinion.
