Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 70.1/100, a mean average of 69.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 69.3/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.4.

While staying mostly on safe Britpop-ground, Junk of the Heart sees The Kooks somewhat expand and evolve their sound away from guitar-driven indie rock towards more synth-based pop-rock. The band still offers memorable melodies, sing-along choruses and a good time, but they're sound has been polished to an extreme, thus dropping an aesthetic that made The Kooks popular in the first place.

What this album lacks compared to the previous two ones is the youthful energy on their best tracks. Almost every song ion this album seems toned down and diminished to the point of them almost having no impact on the listener. Take Fuck the World Off for example; it sounds like it's lacking the edge of Naive or See The Sun. There is also trashy filler material on the album, such as Time Above The Earth.

I love The Kooks and it’s for this exact reason. They just make amazing music, they really do. They’re true to themselves and they make great music. This album is amazing. Every single song on the album is great, there is no low point. Sometimes I come across albums, even relatively good albums, where I wonder how much longer is left on the album. This album I did not. I was happy the entire way through the album and could’ve had even more. It’s a great album, definitely get it.

Very average album. It does not hurt to listen to but it's not exciting. Just another new album, which you can hear a lot.
