What an interesting album this band’s 3rd release is
Whilst the copyright on the album sleeve reads 1999 it may as read 1969 such is the strong retro sound permeating through its 12 tracks. The nearest touch point is clearly The Zombies 1968 masterpiece ‘Odessey & Oracle’ and this is a compliment of the highest degree
Interspersed between the main tracks are wonderful interludes that feel longer than they actually are , such as opener “Oriental Boulevard” (24 seconds) , “The Great British Spring” ( instrumental 2:30) , “Cienfuegos” ( a spaghetti western instrumental 3:01) , “The Automobile Song” ( 1:36) and “Vale of Cashmere” ( instrumental 1:45) which all flow seamlessly from track to track
I can’t finish up without mentioning track 4 “Today Knows” which is simply sublime, I’ve no doubt that exposed to a wider audience it would have been destined to become a modern classic. Never mind , it’s on my all time favourite song list and I feel privileged to have had it come into my world. If you can’t be bothered listening to this entire album ( and really you should) at the very least check out “Today Knows”
