Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 72.0/100, a mean average of 70.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 72.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 10.9.

The Hoodoo Gurus fourth album is sort of hit or miss. There are terrific ballads here like "Come Anytime," "Shadow Me," and "Baby Can Dance", assorted thrashy 60's garage psychedelia, and some tunes that approach their fellow Aussie compatriots AC/DC in metal glory like "Axegrinder" and "Glamourpuss", but songs like the baseball as record business themed "Where's That Hit?" just don't work despite the clever lyrics. Speaking of lyrics, Faulkner wrote or collaborated on all 11 tunes here and shows he still possess a wit that is as sharp as ever. As he says early on in the album "you can't escape from gravity". It sure would be great if Hoodoo Gurus could escape from being an also ran to the top of public consciousness.

Fairly good follow up to 1987's 'Blow Your Cool' . It took me years to get into this album but I eventually got there (I was still besotted with 'Blow Your Cool '). Enough here to recommend and enjoy . Comfortably Guru's 4th best album behind Stoneage / Mars and Blow .
