El Power Metal americano siempre se mantuvo distante con respecto a su hermano europeo, con una base rítmica sólida de poso thrasher que le otorgaba una brutalidad impropia. En Iced Earth se reúne lo mejor de Metallica, Iron Maiden y Judas Priest; todo a la vez. En este disco alcanzaron su cima compositiva tras un buen puñado de discos notables a lo largo de los 90. A pesar de los continuos cambios de formación a lo largo de su trayetoria, en 'Something Wicked This Way Comes' Iced Earth presentó una alineación más o menos estable, liderados por Jon Schaffer y con Matt Barlow como vocalista de excepción. Los riffs del primero son endiablados, de una calidad técnica exquisita; y la voz de Barlow ha sido la mejor que ha pasado por las filas de los americanos, con un manejo en los agudos impecable, cortante como una cuchilla.
