Borrowing heavily from the Bristol rave scene, the East London grime scene and the dub poetry of Linton Kwesi Johnson, London Zoo is an abrasive, claustrophobic assault of harsh percussion, heavy sub-bass and aggressive West Indian patois that was surprising as much for its' brash, unrelenting attitude as its' immediate and almost universal accessibility. What I am trying to say is that, put simply, a record this angry is rarely this fun. The album's harsh, metallic edges are smoothed out by the incessant danceability found in these grooves, and you'd be hard pushed to find a better selection of modern-era UK "toasters" (especially Roll Deep's Flowdan, who is as enjoyable a grime rapper as has ever emerged). An incendiary addition to the genre.
