After a seventeen-year hiatus between albums, Mazzy Star came back and made an album that no one could reasonably have expected to be this good. It isn't exactly a major step forward artistically, but it's pretty amazing that they were able to pick up pretty much where they left off with Among My Swan and make an album that sounds neither dated nor merely an attempt to appease fans. Hope Sandoval's voice sounds as dreamy and ethereal as ever, and she continues to mine the emotional terrain located somewhere between wistful sadness and outright depression, and do it earnestly and convincingly. Seasons of Your Day is a stylistically consistent record, but my favorite track has to be the urgent title track, with its emotionally demanding yet commiserating lyrics: "Won't you let me come inside? / I've released all of my pride / I know you're alone because I've been there."
