The true rags to riches story of the era; the way it came to me, she was the girl in Atlantic City who rode the diving horse into the tank, for which she was paid with a spot in the stall and a share of the oats. Krupa heard her at an open mike of some sort, and liked her, and when Goodman passed on her-- she was about a crude as they come and that wasn't his style-- Krupa took her out with his own band and hand to mouth became mouth to in hand ever after...
She said something to the effect that she lacked a uvula and had to sort of force her soft palate to make sounds in a compensatory way, and that accounted for whatever was unique in her sound.
And she was Debbie Reynolds best friend, and sometimes you can hear Anita-influence in Reynolds' singing as she grew into the Hollywood star role that had come to her so unexpectedly.
