Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 14% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 74.3/100, a mean average of 75.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 75.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 12.6.

Damn hippies ruin everything. I'm all for freeing my mind, but i'm not a big fan of lazy songwriting. A lot of the tracks on "free your mind" have the basis of something really good, but the pseudo-drug-induced mental state of the songwriting has left a lot of these songs without much punch, lazily chugging along. It's a shame too, because their last two dance-punk albums ("zonoscope" and "in ghost colours") have been strong top-10 (5?) year-end albums with some great dance tracks. This one has a few as well, like "we are explorers" (of the mind, of course) and the title track ("free your mind" with the most subtle exclamation point EVER), but the ideas aren't cohesive enough to create enough memorable strong tracks, and the sun-drenched synths are awash across the whole disc, sogging some tracks more than they need to be. But don't misunderstand me -- it's a good album. It's just not up to what i expect out of cut copy. (Edited)
