Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 5% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 75.9/100, a mean average of 75.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 76.6/100. The standard deviation for this album is 11.9.

I am a Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree and if they take influence from them, IMO it would be from their worst parts. I find this album a step down from their previous albums, although it is understandable due to the circumstances in which it was made. Still, it contains some nice instrumental parts which make it worth listening to.

Midlake's first album after the departure of lead singer and main creative force Tim Smith, Antiphon was recorded with the band in considerable turmoil after Smith left in the middle of the sessions for what was to be their next album. Much to their credit, they abandoned their efforts to enact Smith's vision without him and instead turned in a different direction, toward a sound more progressive than sylvan. It isn't their best album, but I was quite surprised to discover it's as good as it is. Taking inspiration from prog rock outfits such as Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree, the band marched forth with a big sound, and the efforts pay off with a very solid record. I'll be interested in hearing what these folks create when given more time to refine and hone their post-Smith sound.

The surprise package. I discovered it via numerous end of year polls and I’m glad I did. Melancholy and almost orchestral in places, I found this easy to like on first hearing, then improve with time. I’m not familiar with their other output, but will delve further in the new year. Note to listeners. Side two, from Vale onwards is where this album truly picks up (or more accurately goes deeper) sound wise. Highlights for me is Aurora Gone and the reprise of Provider. Watch out for the flutes.
