Damien Jurado has always been a storyteller, but this album extends his typical one-off story-songs into a kind of concept album, albeit one with a loose structure and far-flung, often psychedelic, mystical themes. The musical style is familiar if you've heard Jurado's other albums: firmly within the genre of indie folk, but with flashes of Tejano and electric guitar freakouts. Perhaps more than on his other records, there's a clear presence of Jurado's own Christian worldview, but these feel more mythological and allegorical than theological or dogmatic. (Edited)
