"I wanted the new La Sera record to sound like Lesley Gore fronting Black Flag," frontwoman Katy Goodman says in the press material for House of the Dawn. "I didn't want it to be another record of me sad, alone in my room. I wanted to have fun playing music and writing songs with a band." I'd say mission accomplished. The indie-rock fun of Best Coast is probably the most obvious point of comparison here, but in their best moments--for example on the title track--they achieve a level of rock virtuosity that pretty far surpasses anything Best Coast has done.
