Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 62.3/100, a mean average of 61.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 61.2/100. The standard deviation for this album is 21.8.

The snob in me says no!, but my dancing daughters, and simple feelings inside me says good:)
Even Nytol can't beat how good In The Lonely Hour is at sending you to sleep.
A good voice doesn't make a good album.
Everything smells artificially product for tv audience.
Sam Smith has a significant problem in this album: he, or his writers, are pretty garbage at writing songs. Even if they're heartfelt, they have no impact unless it directly relates to your situation and come across as either cheesy or tacky. A good chunk of the songs also sound like procedurally generated pop drivel that will never make an impact in anyone's ears, especially not when your opening track is one such track. That being said, the piano combined with Smith's powerful, evocative vocals can really, *really* make songs soar, and several of the songs on the album are truly exceptional and stay with you for a long time. I'd rate the album a 65 if this was the Shadows edition, which boasts some incredible features for the album's 3 best songs *especially* Lay Me Down with John Legend which is one of the most beautiful duets I've ever heard if not the single most.
Key Cuts: Stay With Me, I'm Not the Only One, Lay Me Down
Wonderful voice, very honest, and soulful.
As with his breakthrough feature on Disclosure's "Latch", Smith's powerful voice carries this album and is its foundation. His vocals seem to effortlessly convey emotion in a way that will appeal to many audiences. I believe this album has lived up to his hype and potential.
