I appreciate the great talent here - bluesy, soulful and clear. What many are decrying about Hozier is his commerciality, but in addition to performing radio friendly tunes, this guy delivers great smooth vocals with raw emotion. That's how I like my music served up.
Personal favorite of 2014. He has a great voice and effortlessly blends blues, soul, gospel and rock into one. I don't understand the poor ratings on this site for this album.
One day, when Hozier achieves the legendary status he deserves, his debut album will be rightly hailed as a masterpiece.
Let's not go to the extremes. In my opinion, it doesn't deserve a low rating as it is better than the pre-fabricated synth pop of this era and it contains a wonderful single (plus other good songs like From Eden or Angel of Small...), but I don't find it wonderful either. Many songs are commonplace, simple pop-soul, pop-blues etc which have nothing special. I will get many negatives for this, I know.

This is completely unjust, a 69? Are you serious? This album wasn't AMAAZING, but it should have at the very least low to mid 70s. Honestly Hozier shows his artistic variety from the soulful guitars of "Jackie and Wilson" to the grandioise drums, pianos, and guitars of "Take me to church." But through all this the one aspect of the album that shines the most is HIS VOICE. He has a deep and beautifully clear voice and has extremely great control of it as well, there aren't any parts of the album that I disliked, I'm not the biggest fan of "someone new" but I still think its a great album that shows Hoziers potential and raw singing ability as well. 85/100 for me, And I'm really looking forward to his next drop.
