Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 70.2/100, a mean average of 68.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 68.7/100. The standard deviation for this album is 12.0.

I would have to say, this is by far my favorite BS&T album as a whole. It really surprised me, and took a turn in a complete opposite direction to their prior album #3 which was only full of covers and a bit of a let down compared to their second release that beat Abbey road for a Grammy.

You realize that #3 was perhaps a filler for the record companies in waiting for the real masterpiece that would be BS&T4. The album opens with a powerful riff on the guitar, and from the first three seconds you know this album is going to be a great one. “Go Down Gamblin” is just a classic soul song that really fits David’s raspy voice, and with a killer guitar solo. I would say it is BS&T’s heaviest tune they ever did.

The second song happens to be my favorite BS&T tune of all time, “Cowboys & Indians” written by a member of the Association Terry Kirkman and Richard Halligan. To me it’s a perfect representation of the transition from the 1950’s into the 1960’s, and growing up to realize that old traditions are leaving as we evolve. It represents American culture at the time period of Vietnam, really phenomenal composition.

It then moves to two very uplifting numbers called “John The Baptist” written by Al Kooper and “Redemption” which again is filled with a very experimental horn section and David’s mesmerizing voice that just draws you in. The rest of the album is filled with bittersweet melodies and instrumentals.

“Lisa, Listen To Me” is just a cool jazz number with a hip saxophone. I could go on, because there is not a boring or bad tune on the album. It’s the kind of album that you want to listen from beginning to end. David & the gang really outdid themselves on this one and it surprised me a lot. Highly underrated, really surprised me, and almost didn’t happen. This was the last album before David’s departure from the band.
