I hear Chico Hamilton as someone who, like MJQ and Dave Brubeck and other holdovers from the 50s but in my opinion more swinging and fun than those examples, carried "Cool Jazz" (as in Miles's Birth Of The...) aka the "West Coast" sound, into the 60s, with its tuneful chamber-jazz lightness. Gabor Szabo carried the style forward on his mostly excellent albums, but not many others did, the 60s were going in more heated directions. Mellow and swinging, but also playful and imaginative, excellent compositions from Charles Lloyd, it's a stone groove.
