The melancholic voice of Alynda Lee Segarra is central to the appeal of Hurray for the Riff Raff, an appropriate name for a band that often chooses material that cheers for underdogs or recasts familiar Americana in ways that give them a feminist spin. My Dearest Darkest Neighbor is an album of covers that showcases the band's ability to reinterpret older material in ways that feel fresh and original. Originally released as a reward for those who helped fund the Kickstarter campaign for their previous album, the heavy demand for these recordings eventually prompted the band to give this one a proper release as well. It's a good thing, too, as their version of Lead Belly's "Western Cowboy" is one of the very best of that famous and frequently covered song.
