Portland-based Fruition is one of the many bands I enjoy that I first heard at the Albino Skunk Music Festival. They're a fairly conventional but extremely talented bluegrass outfit, and despite hailing from the Pacific Northwest, they sing credibly about themes familiar to Appalachian folk music. My favorite track from this album is "Whippoorwill," featuring Mimi Naja on lead vocals, a lovely nostalgic love song that evokes one of the most evocative and memorable bird calls of the Appalachian Mountains. If you've ever spent the night in a shelter along the Appalachian Trail and been awakened by a whippoorwill serenading you from just a few feet away, you'll not soon forget it.
