I'm not normally one of those musical listeners who tends to prefer every artist's "old school" work. While I often appreciate the raw energy and creativity of first albums, I almost always see improvements in subsequent work because, usually, the artist has a clearer artistic vision and, let's be honest, a little more money to work with in the studio. Given those caveats, I really do appreciate Faithless Street as a very strong first effort by Ryan Adams and company. This is Whiskeytown at their most straightforwardly alt-country, and their raw passion shines through on just about every track, particularly the piercing ballad "Black Arrow, Bleeding Heart."
My all time favorite album. Definitely the best album from the alt country scene, and probably the best country album period.

Wonderfully heartbreaking prelude to Ryan Adams' solo career, this is probably the top alt-country gem of the 90s.
