Even if I didn't have a friend who grew up with Mandolin Orange co-founder Emily Frantz, I'd still be a huge fan of theirs. They write songs with a deep sense of social justice that helps them transcend their genre of progressive bluegrass--a genre that I like anyway, but that can be a bit artistically constraining because of its relatively narrow range of instrumentation and arrangements. On This Side of Jordan I especially appreciate "Cavalry," a song that details the internal monologue of a soldier who can think only of desertion: "Now I'm saving my strength for running / These days I'm saving my strength for running." I can't blame him; there are few causes I'd be willing to fight a war for.
